Phoenix Metal Trading Adds Solar Power System
Industrial scrap recycler Phoenix Metal Trading, Inc. has added a 69.3kW solar power system to their central Phoenix plant. The system, which was designed and installed by Empire Renewable Energy, is expected to offset up to 70% of the industrial recycling operation’s electricity expense.
Phoenix Metal Trading is one of Arizona’s largest full-service industrial metal recycling operations. Business Development Manager Ian James said the new solar power system is part of his company’s drive to live the industry’s “Green Recycling” mantra.
“Solar power was one of the first options we looked at as we explored ways to become a more environmentally conscious company,” he said. “Thanks to the vision of company founder Jonathan Colner, we’ve been able to take a positive environmental stand. We intend to be the #1 environmentally conscious metal recycler in Arizona!”
The solar installation was facilitated, in part, by Arizona Public Service’s (APS) Renewable Energy Incentive Program. The project was approved for production-based incentives by APS, which offers financial incentives to customers who add Renewable Energy systems to their homes or businesses.
Empire Renewable Energy teams installed 308 roof-mounted photo-voltaic (PV) modules and 11 inverters for the system, which has web-enabled data logging and monitoring capabilities. At the request of Arizona Public Service, Empire also relocated and installed a new service entrance for the system.
Due to the incentives from APS and state and federal governments, James said Phoenix Metals expects to see a total payback of their investment within five years. That investment and the company’s “Complete Care” full-service green recycling programs are generating a very positive buzz among industrial customers.
“Response has been amazing,” he stated. “In fact, we have already signed new customers based on our strong environmental position. Sometimes it pays to do the right thing.”
